Tovwirane Organisation rehabilitates Kabuwa Health Facility in Mzimba South for Improved Youth Friendly Health Services
Service provision and uptake of youth-friendly health services (YFHS) are driven by a variety of factors. Some of the factors in question are: are décor and surroundings inviting to youth clients? Does the facility have counseling and examination rooms that ensure privacy for youth clients? Does the facility have a separate space or separate room used for youth clients? Tovwirane Organisation has been implementing the Improving Youth Friendly Health Services Project in Mzimba, check this link https://www.tovwirane.org/improved-youth-friendly-health-services-in-mzimba-malawi-project/. At the start of the project in 2019, a needs assessment was conducted in intervention health facilities to identify key gaps/needs which needed urgent attention. Kabuwa health facility, a hard-to-reach facility which is in Traditional Authority Khosolo, was one of the facilities which performed poorly on the aforementioned factors in question. The pictures below depict the facility before it was rehabilitated.
Following the assessment, in October 2020 Tovwirane conducted a pre-rehabilitation assessment at Kabuwa Health Centre. The exercise, which was facilitated by the Mzimba South DHO maintenance team, mapped out key maintenance issues that were to be supported by the project. Key findings were that facility required to be painted in and out, replace the doors, locks, general building as it had cracks of the walls and also required some electrification and maintenance of the water point which had been out of use for over a year.
Based on the above findings, Tovwirane procured and supplied all the required materials to the DHO maintenance team to have Kabuwa health centre rehabilitated. Apart from rehabilitating the centre, Tovwirane also managed to fix a faulty water point which was out of use for more than a year. A signpost that details YFHS being provided by the facility was also erected at the facility site. It is expected that an attractive environment of the facility will provide a suitable environment for the provision of Youth Friendly Health Services and uptake of these services by youths with and without disabilities. The pictures below depict the facility after the rehabilitation.
The outcome of the rehabilitation has been overwhelming since it has provided a suitable environment for the provision of YFHS. Youth clients have reported that the facility’s decor and surroundings are inviting, they have been allocated a special room for YFHS provision, and the rooms ensure privacy for youth clients. Of more importance, the uptake of YFHS by youths with and without disability has soared as service utilization data at the facility has significantly improved.
