In improving knowledge of the general population and key and priority populations on the correct and consistent use of male and female condoms, Tovwirane organization in collaboration with the Phalombe District Health Office conducted a physical activation session in Phaloni, a hard-to-reach area in Phalombe District. A cyclone led to flooding around the area which displaced several local residents. The residents were in camps while others were still in their homes. Due to various activities which take place in such a context, several people as well as sex workers among other people flocked to the area and it was reported that so much transactional sex occurs.
When planning for activation sessions, Tovwirane Organisation was guided by the district health promotion office to prioritize Phaloni on a market day. The district condom coordinator also recommended that their office takes advantage of the activation session and that they also distribute free condoms. The activation session was quite a success. Various key messages were promoted to over 350 people (including AGYW, FWSs, taxi and canoe operators) and these also demanded male and female condoms. A public address system was used with a crier on the microphone and the audience asked questions which were addressed.
“Thank you Tovwirane for the initiative, we have learnt a lot about how to correctly use condoms and we have also received free condoms, lives have been saved because I can assure you that in these times there is a lot of sexual activities happening. Sex workers actually come from all places and they also camp here to provide sex”, Male audience member.
